Christmas morning was magic! Jack lit up when he saw that Santa brought exactly what he wanted--a choo choo train and a race car--and more! It's so pure that his greatest wish in this world is a toy train. Now Jack has the complete collection of these mix-and-match magnetic vehicles. Jared set up a lincoln log village in front of Jack's presents and Jack still talks about how cool that was.
We had a cereal buffet for breakfast, since it's tradition for Santa to bring everyone a box of their favorite cereal. I also made a quiche but knew that Jack would be way more interested in the Cap'n Crunch.
Jack's grandparents spoiled him with the best toys. Blocks and additions to his favorite train set and toy fruit he could cut up. It took nearly all day to open all the presents because Jack would get so excited about each new toy and play with it for an hour. Jared and I had a wonderful Christmas too.
Mama Lambert got me a Spaetzle (schpetz-leh) press, and since I already had a sauerbraten (German roast) marinating and the 4 ingredients required to make spaetzle, we had a full-on German Christmas feast. I think this will be a new tradition for either Christmas or New Years every year. Spaetzle was my favorite food I tried when Jared and I honeymooned in Germany. It's sooooo good. You make a simple dough, put it in the spaetzle press, push the dough into boiling water, and within 20 seconds you have a delicious batch of soft noodles that you toss with good cheese (I used gruyere since I had some on hand). It's essentially fancy German mac n' cheese, and it's amazing.
Merry Christmas from our family to yours! And the happiest of New Years!

Christmas 2020

I'll divide our Christmas festivities into two posts since there are so many pictures. This was quite possibly our last Christmas all on our own, far away from any family. Luckily Jared's program ended up unexpectedly giving him Christmas Day off, but he had to work a 30-hr shift early the morning after Christmas (Saturday into Sunday) so we wouldn't have been able to drive anywhere for Christmas. The end of this stage of our life has felt so far off for 7 years, and now we're having our lasts. Last Christmas of training, and it was perfect.
On Christmas Eve, we opened these cute matching Christmas pajamas from my Grandma Roper. Jack was so excited that "Nana" got them for us, and he immediately wanted Savvy in matching pajamas too. We found an old red shirt in the back of Jared's closet and that did the trick.
Last time we stayed in Casper for Christmas we got Papa John's pizza on Christmas Eve, so I knew I wanted to make sure we did that again. I cook a nicer meal on Christmas Day so I figure an easy Christmas Eve dinner is a good thing. We ventured into town wearing our pajamas. There's a park across the street from the hospital that is decked out for Christmas. I made us get out of the car to walk around and enjoy the lights, and I'm so glad I did because right as we got out a light show started and we enjoyed music and twinkling lights the whole time we were there. Jack loved swinging and running in circles around the nativity.
We drove around town for a while finding the best Christmas light displays, and then we grabbed our pizza on the way home.
Jack was very tired by this point. There was still so much I wanted to do--watch a Christmas show, read the nativity, and sing Christmas songs--but I could tell Jack only had maybe 20 minutes left in him so I had the brilliant idea of combining all 3 and turning on A Charlie Brown Christmas. It's short, there are several Christmas songs, and Linus reads the nativity scripture at the end. Perfect.
After the movie Jack and Jared put out Oreos and milk for Santa. Jack thought the reindeer would appreciate some graham crackers, so those went on the plate too. It was so fun to have Jack be old enough to get really excited about the Christmas things this year! Jack ended up eating 2 of Santa's 3 Oreos off his plate after I put it by the tree, but Santa gets cookies at every house so I figured he wouldn't mind being shorted this time.
And that was our magical Christmas Even with Toddler Jack! After he went to sleep we turned on Muppet Christmas Carol and set up the gift piles and cleaned the house. The Christmas magic must be creeping back into my life because I lay in bed unable to fall asleep for hours. That might have something to do with Jared snoring and Savvy scratching to go outside at 1 a.m. Next year I'll take a melatonin on Christmas Eve and invest in some better noise-canceling earplugs.

Christmas Eve

Greetings from windy Wyoming! We got a couple Christmas cards in the mail this week. I didn't plan on sending Christmas cards out this year. I've had issues with grumbling my way through the holiday season the last couple years as I try to fit Christmas shopping, shipping gifts to faraway family, neighbor treats, holiday parties, and getting photos taken and cards sent out all into the month of December. With a toddler who takes one short nap a day, a husband who's working 13+ hour days (including most weekends) this month, and no nearby family, I knew that I'd need to cut down on some of the Christmas to-do list and finish my shopping ahead of time if I wanted to try enjoying the holidays this year. And whaddaya know, it worked! I finished 90% of our shopping in November, I'm not stressing about neighbor gifts (feels almost taboo with covid anyway), and we'll stick to a virtual Christmas card.

I've enjoyed December 1000% more this year through intentionally slowing down. But the other day I realized we hadn't set up a tripod for a proper family picture at all in 2020. Jared doesn't get home until well after dark, but he had Saturday off of work so we seized the opportunity to run out into the prairie and snap 4-5 pictures. The winter air is bitter cold here, so that's all Jared would give me. Can't blame him. This is the actual best shot we got, mostly because it's the only one where my hair isn't completely covering my face. Wouldn't have it any other way though, as this is a pretty accurate portrayal of what prairie life is like. Yay wind.

We're going to have one more go at a 2020 family picture when my parents come visit over New Years in a couple weeks. I'll do a "Christmas Card" blog post with highlights/lowlights of the year after that. For now, here are some highlights from this last week:

-Jared got his covid vaccine! He had chills the first night and a sore arm the next day, but those were his only side-effects.

-Laura is invested in Star Wars. I finally watched both seasons of The Mandalorian this month, and now I'm going back to watch all the movies and actually pay attention to them for the first time in my life.

-Jack is pretty darn potty trained. He'll continue to wear pull-ups at night/naps until we move and get him a toddler bed in June, but otherwise he's doing great.

-Jared is exhausted. On these especially demanding work rotations he comes home so thoroughly wiped out that by the time Jack's asleep, all he has left in him is to watch a show and maybe take a bath. In the past I've tried to keep tackling items on my to-do list while Jared unwinds, but after 2.5 years of residency I've noticed that I feel really disconnected from him after the tough rotations when we've had minimal quality time together. So this time around I'm suspending my to-do list in the evenings and sitting by Jared while we watch a Goldbergs or something Star Wars related together. It's only been one week out of six for this OB rotation, but so far so good. Feeling the love.

-Laura is prioritizing winter walks in the prairie. We live right across the street from wide-open prairie. It's beautiful and peaceful out there, especially during sunset. I take advantage of this nightly in the summer, but I've always been too chicken to continue the prairie walks in the winter because of the bitter, constant 30-mph winds. But since we're down to our last 6 months here, I'm bundling up in a huge coat, chunky scarf covering my face, beanie, and thick gloves and braving the cold whenever possible. And kicking myself for not doing so in past years. It's just as peaceful and pretty in the winter, as long as you're properly protected from the cold.

-Jack is going through a "rocket ships" phase. He got a rocket ship toy for potty training and he's in love. He spends most of his day counting down from 5 and blasting it off to space. He's also getting super excited for Christmas. He asks to drive around Bar Nunn and see the Christmas lights every evening after it gets dark (at 4:30). He loves all Christmas songs--favorites are "Jingle Bells" and "Fleas Nadidad" (Feliz Navidad). He was brave enough to talk to Santa Claus in the mall a few weeks back, and he loves to watch the old-school Rudolph, Frosty the Snowman, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Yesterday we had a lesson about baby Jesus and he played with our nativity set all day. It's going to be a fun Christmas this year.

Prairie Times

Well hey! It's been another uneventful week. Jared and I have been going through our house category by category (the Marie Kondo method) and getting rid of stuff. It's been years since we've done anything like this, so it's needed. We donated 10 garbage bags full of clothes, a box of old textbooks, and now we're going through any old papers to get rid of. Feels good. Today Jared started a very demanding 6-week OB rotation, so I'll probably be finishing up most of the rest of the categories on my own. I've got this. I don't have many recent pictures, so here are a few older ones that are fun. As for potty training updates, it's going well! We haven't had any accidents in several days so we're feeling good.

Oldies

Oh hey! We've had a bit of a slow week. Jack is in full-on potty training mode so we're staying home as much as possible. I guess 2020 is probably a good year to potty train. It's going great so far! I tried doing this six months ago and chickened out after one day. I think the biggest problem was that I wasn't ready, but Jack is for sure much more ready this time around than he was before too. It's been a completely different experience. He had two accidents when we first started, and then he figured it out pretty quick. We'll still have an occasional accident, but not every day. He's very motivated by toy bribes, so that's been a big part of our strategy this time haha. He gets a sticker when he goes #1 and gets a little toy every time he fills up an 8-10 sticker chart. Then there was a bigger toy for the first time or two he went #2. Very exciting stuff over here.

Other than that, nothing new to report. I'm going through my DSLR memory cards and I'm going to try to get some unposted older pictures on the blog during uneventful weeks like this one. So here are some pictures from our first big snowstorm here in Casper, back in the first week of September. It was shockingly early to get snow (it was a LOT of snow), since August is the hottest month of the year here. Luckily it only lasted a day or two. It was actually a very fun fluke storm. Jack was a big fan and Jared gets all the credit for this great snowman:

I love these goobs!
