Merry Christmas! We had a great holiday weekend. Jared's sisters flew in from North Carolina and South Korea, so we spent a lot of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day at his parents' rental house in Redmond (their own home flooded and got lots of damage/mold, so it's been under construction for the past several months). We played lots of games and ate good food. Also opened so many thoughtful presents! We for sure need to up our gifting game next year. On Christmas Eve we got home pretty late, so Jared and I stayed up until the wee hours of the morning setting Christmas out and mounting our new frame tv above our fireplace (our Christmas gift to each other--I wanted to simplify Christmas this year so me and Jared just did one big present and stockings for each other). The frame tv is basically just a tv that mounts flatter against the wall and displays digital art so it can almost pass as a picture in a frame. You can buy bezels to go around the outer edge that make it look even more convincing, but it'll be a while before we spring for that. This gift was as much for Jared as it was for me. He LOVES art and has loved choosing different works of art to display each day.

Christmas really is so much more magical with kids in the house. Jack's favorite present was two little remote control cars that he and Jared have raced around nonstop the past few days. He also loves that stuffed fox Santa got him. He named it "Foxy Doxy."

^^The cutest thing Jack put on his list to Santa this year was, "A ring like my mommy and daddy's" (our wedding rings). Couldn't say no to the actual cutest request ever. Jared found him a dinosaur mood ring. Jack's already over it but I love it so much.
^^Jack's preschool teachers gave him a cute book called "The Gruffalo." Love them.
^^Jack grabbed my camera and snapped some pictures as I was making a little foraged centerpiece for our Christmas dinner. Love seeing myself through his eyes. We suspended that evergreen branch above our dining table for a dinner with Jared's parents and sisters last week. I love it so much that I think we'll do it again next year and put a water tube at the base so it lasts longer. Jared loves a real Christmas tree but we didn't want to pay for one this year when we already have an artificial tree. To me this felt like a happy, free sampling of a real Christmas tree (we found the branch on the ground on one of our walks through the forest).

You might also have noticed the piano in the background. The dining room isn't where I initially pictured the piano going, but it's actually been so fun having it there. It gets played daily and adds a little something extra to the space. I also painted the walls a pinkish cocoa color. I'll do a more formal post of the dining room once I buy matching chairs and finish it up down the road.
^^The views out our front and back windows. It snowed all Christmas night and the whole day after Christmas. This much snow isn't super common in this part of Washington, but I'm so happy it's here. Feels like home to have snowy houses and trees around Christmas. I LOVE how our little neighborhood feels with snow on those enormous trees surrounding us on all sides. It almost feels like we could be the only houses in the middle of miles and miles of forest. The perfect feeling for a cozy Christmas week at home (Jared requested this whole week off, yay!)
And finally, I wanted to post some pictures of Jared's finished home office! I got this all designed and set up as a surprise for his birthday last month. He was waiting on a desktop computer, which he got for Christmas, so now it's all finished.
^^It's a pretty small room, so this is the only angle I could get since I don't have a wide-angle lens. Jared wanted a desktop area for a computer/work, and another worktop area to do some painting once in a while. I found this two-person desk that fit the bill perfectly. He also wanted some open shelving to display some books and treasures (his cute little fossil collection mostly). Right now we're using the bottom left shelf as a library shelf where Jack can come "check out" books that don't fit on the bookshelves in his own room. All that's missing from the office at this point are some blinds, but they aren't really crucial so we'll probably leave the window bare until the other necessary home projects are done.
^^My favorite part of our office is the view. This isn't a great picture of it, but to the right there are tons of tall trees, and to the left are more tall trees, that cute wooden barn, and on clear days the best, most majestic view of three-finger mountain(s) off in the distance.

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday weekend and some more cozy days ahead!

Christmas + Finished Home Office

We've had a busy week with a busier week ahead! That said, I'm going to focus this post on one quick thing we did over the weekend because Jared's going to be home in 10 minutes and then we need to immediately drive an hour to his parents' house to meet up with his sisters who flew in from North Carolina and South Korea for the holidays. Then we'll drive another hour into Seattle to go to our favorite restaurant and see some Christmas lights. I'll be sure to take some pictures for next week's post.

For now, here are some pictures of us doing some gardening in Jack's preschool "Zen Garden" on Saturday. They assign each family one week from the year to pick a day to do a little upkeep. Mostly it's just fun and good to teach the kiddos about pitching in and working. And I appreciated the opportunity to snap some pictures of Jack's cute preschool that we love so much. It was extremely rainy the morning we decided to go, but that's pretty much the norm in the winter here. At least the temperatures are pretty reasonable.

^^Some of Jack's preschool friends. There are 14 kids in his afternoon class, so some of these are from the morning class. Jack is in the middle with the navy/white striped shirt.
Jack did a great job and loved telling us more about his preschool days. Thought I'd post these pictures to remember one of our favorite parts of living in Granite Falls.

Preschool Appreciation Post

Hi! I didn't post yesterday. I was spending my Monday in recovery after one of those weekends. On Saturday I sent Jack and Jared to Redmond to spend the day with Jared's parents so I could write my talk I'd be giving in church the next day. I spent the previous Saturday with Jack while Jared wrote his talk, so this Saturday it was my turn.

Our talks went great. Except the part where afterward, the first counselor told Jared he wasn't thorough enough and would need to give another talk next month. WHAT. Sounds made up. It is not. This was the delivery: "Brother Lambert, I have some bad news for you. But maybe it's good news? You didn't have time to finish your talk, so Bishop would like you to give another talk in January." There is some back story. Our bishop is very cool and very involved in our little community. He loves sports and announces for Granite Falls' high school football team. He made up a calling called "ward fitness director" and gave the calling to Jared, presumably because Jared's a doctor, or maybe because we named our son Jack Lambert, who is apparently a legendary football player from the 80s. Who knew. Anyway, this calling is basically the bishop's passion project. He and Jared had a little meeting discussing his vision for the calling, and he wanted Jared to give a talk for 10 minutes, and then spend another 10 minutes talking about his calling and getting the ward excited about it. But because Jared was the last speaker, he ran out of time and didn't get to go into detail. So now he's getting "another chance" next month. Glad it's not me, but it is kind of a funny story.

After church we went for a little walk (I'll include pictures below) and then promptly got to work cooking and getting the house ready because we invited a family from the ward over for dinner. Jared and I don't love putting ourselves out there to make friends. It's hard for us, and most of the time we'd rather just be hanging out on our own. But we know friends are good to have and when we think back on the past places we've lived, one of the things we miss most are the friends that came into our lives in each of those places. And so, inviting people over. They invited us over a month or two ago, so we figured we'd have them over this time.

Dinner went great, the food was delicious, and Jack was having a great time playing with their 5-year-old and 3-year-old. And then came the, "CRACK!" Jack had been running in circles around our couch and tripped and rammed his head into the corner of our coffee table. The scream was telling, and by the time we got to him there was already blood gushing everywhere. I'm so grateful Jared was there in that moment and knew what to do. I held Jack while Jared grabbed some towels to put pressure on the gaping wound in Jack's forehead. It was obvious he'd need stitches. This is one of the cases where it comes in handy to have a doctor in the house, especially since the nearest urgent care is half an hour away and it was already well after Jack's bedtime. Jared had everything he'd need to stitch Jack up except for some lidocaine gel. Luckily there's a Rite Aid in our town of population 3,700 and they had some in stock. Our new friends stayed with me, and Shanna cleaned up the kitchen and all the toys the kids had gotten out while I just held Jack and tried to keep him calm and sneak some ibuprofen down his throat.  In hindsight I probably should have told them to head home and get their kids to bed, but I didn't have the clarity of mind and I'm so grateful for all she did.

Jared came home with the lidocaine and we sent our friends home while we waited for it to take effect. It took some creative thinking to get Jack to hold still. He was screaming and exhausted and in pain, hungry because he didn't touch his dinner, and he didn't want Jared to come anywhere near him. What eventually worked was promising him he could open two Christmas presents if he'd hold still until his visual timer beeped while Jared did the stitches. He agree, and I also read him a new book to distract him while Jared did the stitches. It somehow worked. Jack definitely winced when Jared had to tug on the stitches, but that was the worst of it. Thank heavens for lidocaine. Two stitches later and two little tractors that were going to go in his stocking, and Jack was good to go. By the next morning he was back to his normal self, and now I'm sourcing fabric to make an upholstered coffee table and give our wooden one the boot. It'll be great as a train table shoved into a corner of the playroom.

Ok that's a long enough post. Enjoy some pictures from our family walk! Also Jack putting a tiny paper star on top of our tree because we don't have a Christmas tree topper this year haha.

^^I love this goober so much!!!!

Stitches

Happy December! To kick it off, I'm throwing it back to Thanksgiving. This year we were so happy to be invited to Jared's cousin Rachel's home for Thanksgiving, along with Jared's parents. This is the same cousin we celebrated July 4th with at Jared's parents' home. Rachel and her husband have 6 kids, the oldest of whom just got married and the youngest of whom is just older than Jack. They live in Port Orchard, which is a quick ferry ride or slightly longer car drive south of Seattle. We opted to take the ferry down and then drive back. Jack loved the ferry. It was a beautiful ride.

It was so fun to be in a rural setting for Thanksgiving. Jared's cousin's family is good friends with their back-door neighbors, who have a little farm. We were able to see their goats, chickens, and a few little kitties.
^^Jack didn't eat a whole lot of the Thanksgiving dishes, but he made up for it with 3 kinds of pie. He and Mariah were thick as thieves. I was so happy he had someone close in age to play with while we were there. He spent a good chunk of the day missing his cousins Asher and Cole, so I'm glad he had Mariah to keep him company. He warmed up to her quickly and while the rest of us went for a short beach hike, he and Mariah stayed home with Jared's mom and we came back to two red-faced, giggly little kids jumping off the couch into a cushion fort they made. So cute.
It was a good time with family. My favorite part of the day was watching Mariah carry her little kitten around with her literally everywhere all day long. I've never seen someone love animals that much and have that much of a calming affect on them. This was also the most docile kitten I've ever seen. I held it for a bit at the end and almost considered becoming a cat person, but then on the drive home my nose started running and the sneezes came and I remembered, oops, I'm allergic to cats. Anyway, it was a good time, and we're excited for them to come up to Jared's parents for Christmas Eve and for Jack to have a little playmate again.
