Another summer week in the books. We tried some new activities as a family--some went terribly (Ashton Gardens Imaginaria....wayyyy too much walking for a toddler who refuses to ride in a stroller). Some went very well (a morning at Splash Summit water park--Jack is old enough to enjoy riding the slides, so Jared and I traded off getting quality time on the slides with Jack and wading around the wave pool with a delighted Alice).

Jared and I had a wonderful date to one of our favorite towns, Woodland Hills, where we walked a few stunning Parade Homes and ran into my cousin Nate.

Summer is rolling along and we are looking forward to a family reunion at Lava Hot Springs next week. Most likely Alice will sleep terribly the whole time, but also just as likely, Jack is old enough now that he'll do just fine. We will take the improvement of *probably* one good sleeper on a family trip!

Now that we're reaching really high summer temperatures, Jared and I are boiling alive in our south-facing top-floor bedroom. The air conditioning units in our rental aren't sufficient for the size of our home, and the insulation is apparently insufficient as well. Instead of moping about it, we're grateful that this is prompting us to learn a lot about air conditioners and HVAC systems in preparation for advocating for our air conditioning needs when our next home begins construction (hopefully soon, no updates yet).

Now for some pictures from our week:

^^Imaginaria at Ashton Gardens. Very cool. Very magic. Very very large. Very hot. Will not attempt again until next year.
^^Highland Glen park. This was a good time until my children decided they wanted to play Hide and Seek and get lost in the woods.
^^One of my favorite Woodland Hills parade home features--this accordion-style kitchen window opening onto an outdoor countertop. Our next home will (likely) have a big window above the kitchen sink, looking out onto the patio like this. The moment I saw it I knew I'd love to convert it into an awning-style window that could swing up and open for a more indoor-outdoor dining experience. This accordion style application is fun as well.
^^Splash Summit! (Will always be Seven Peaks to me.) Jared had a free morning and we had a free entry to Splash Summit, so we loaded the kids up and headed down. Expectations were low--last time we tried a water park, Jack was 4 and wasn't old enough to enjoy any slides. This time went great! We all had a blast and finished our outing with delicious gelato at Pingino's Gelato. Next time it would be fun to go with cousins, but this time it was magic to have quality family time just the four of us.
^^On Saturday Jared ran the Timpanogos half marathon down AF canyon. Considering how little he trained for it, he did great! He ran 8 minute miles, which was awesome except that I was expecting more like 10 minute miles, and so we arrived just barely in time for Jack to see him cross the finish line. Jared has said that next time he'll probably do a 10k instead (same), but we are all proud of him.
^^Saturday we watched the Strawberry Days Parade right on Chris and Caitlin's front lawn after having some spectacular sourdough pancakes they made. Another time to appreciate kids getting bigger, this is the first parade Alice has attended where she really understood what was going on and LOVED it. She loved dancing to the music, waving to the "queens" on the floats, and dashing into the road to catch candy being flung our way. 10/10, excited to do this again next year.

Strawberry Days

Happy Parade of Homes to all who celebrate. We have been squeezing in home tours whenever we can. With kids at home we won't be able to see all the homes in person, but it has been a fun and inspiring way to spend a few evenings when we can get away.

My health is beginning to feel more manageable day-to-day. I still need to get in to see a specialist to maybe get on some medication for POTS, but after doubling up on my electrolytes/sodium again this week, I was able to start curbing more of my fatigue in addition to the brain fog. It's a hopeful and refreshing feeling.

Jack set up and invited me to a sleepover in our basement. After several days of putting it off, I agreed. Unfortunately this happened to fall on the night Savvy ate something strange up in the mountains and spent the ENTIRE night, every hour, scratching on the basement exterior door to go outside and vomit, then scratch to come back in. I would have just left the door open, but allergies. It was worse than a night with a newborn baby. But Jack never woke until the morning when he had a huge grin plastered to his face about our sleepover "success," so . . . worth it? Worth it one time a year.

I did a decent job of capturing this week in pictures, so we will get to those now with more details in the captions:

^^Father's Day was sweet. I wish I had taken a picture at my parents' home in the evening. We had a wonderful time chatting with my parents and siblings about memories of Dad. At home, Jared opened presents from the kids and I and Alice performed a ballet recital for Jared that was extremely adorable. One of my favorite Alice memories yet.
^^Lots of time spent at parks and splash pads again this week. We have a community pool that Jack wishes we would go to every day. I like the idea, but sometimes the prep work feels like too much, with the swimsuits and sunscreen and bag packing. I need to get our pool routine more streamlined so we can go more often.
^^Jared's mom got Alice this little glowing newt as a gift a few holidays back. It is brilliant because Alice can tap it to make it brighter, dimmer, or turn it off. She loves this newt and it's sweet to spy on her sleeping by the glow. "I wuv mine newt!"
^^My sister-in-law Caitlin invited me to a girls night at the home of a friends of hers who happens to live on my street, but I had never met her yet. It was a wonderful chance to meet lots of neighbors, make some new friends, and enjoy this strawberry moon from her back deck.
^^Here's a Father's Day picture at my parents! Alice did another dance "recital" for grandpa.
^^On Saturday, we did a babysitting swap with two of my siblings so we could all see a few Parade Homes. It was a lot of work but worth it. Our niece Ellie is in a strong separation anxiety phase, but Jared won her over because they seem to have the same taste in music.

And now for some Parade of Homes pictures, if you're into that:
^^We loved the feel of this primary suite. Felt very cozy.
^^My favorite powder bathroom so far this year. All clad in pretty vertical wood paneling, with this lovely mauvey wallpaper on the ceiling.
^^WOW. I know this is highly improbably but I suddenly find myself in need of a semi-enclosed zen garden in our future yard.
^^This home was in our favorite location so far, possibly because we didn't even know this location existed and it's maybe 20 minutes from our house. In Alpine, there is a winding uphill road that takes you up behind some gorgeous hills into an Alpine landscape that is completely hidden from the rest of Utah Valley. You feel like you are alone up here, with only a handful of neighbors and stunning Alpine vistas on all sides. I also don't hate this infinite pool. p.s. this picture doesn't do the scenery justice. This is one of the least scenic angles.  (#16 in the parade)
^^The rest of the pictures will be the inside of this house, which has been our overall favorite home so far. (#13 in the parade). The style was "southern cottage" or something like that. It was SO charming and just felt cozy and peaceful--refreshing after so many hugely grand, often sterile-feeling modern mansions. They did a great job with the landscaping. My phone dies before I could get any pictures of the backyard, but the back had probably a hundred trees planted all around the border, so they will grow and have the backyard feeling like a completely private park. The gardens were full of flowers, the patio furniture was scalloped white wrought iron and felt like a step back in time. There was a little pool with striped cabana umbrellas on the side.
^^The study right off the entry
^^The house was staged entirely with original oil paintings from a nearby art gallery, and WOW. Jared has always loved oil painting, so he was in awe. These are all very much Jared's style and color palette preference. The home walls felt like a cozy gallery and was very nicely curated. I've always thought I'd prefer mixed art media throughout my home, but having everything be a vibrant oil painting felt surprisingly wonderful and cohesive. Better get painting, Jared! Oil paintings ain't cheap.

^^The laundry room cabinetry was painted buttercream yellow. The floors were stained in this diamond-check two-tone stain. The tiles were delft and felt like a cozy step back in time. Yes, yes, yes. We love a cozy cottage house. This house felt real and achievable in a way the others didn't. Obviously the scale of this home is still fairly grand so we'd have to take it down several notches, but we are taking notes. I was a big fun of so many rooms paneled with vertical paneling.

Father's Day 2025, and Parading Around

What a week. Most of it for me was spent in preparation to host our first Roper extended family dinner. I have been looking forward to this for years. When I was growing up, we would have Sunday dinner with my mom's family members who lived nearby, including my Grandma Roper, about twice a month. These fun, casual family dinners are such a core part of my childhood memories and something we really looked forward to coming back to when we moved to Utah.

For our dinner, we decided to make bolognese, pasta, and honey thyme lemonade. Each of our guests brought sides and desserts to share. I learned a lot about hosting a big group for dinner, and we had a wonderful thyme! Er, time. My main regret is that I didn't remember to take any pictures. Next time I will have to assign Jared to take a few pictures. Jack asked if he would make a scavenger hunt for all the little cousins, which he did. He is going to gain a reputation as the Fun Uncle if he isn't careful.

I may not have taken pictures at our family dinner, but I did take pictures of many of out other happenings this week:

^^Another perk of living in Utah is getting invited to fun celebrations with Jared's extended family--usually his aunt and uncle who live in Layton and many of his cousins. His Aunt Lynette hosts a shoe scavenger hunt each May/June called Spring Fling. We all bring a pair of new summer shoes for our kids and some snacks or little toys to share. Then the goodies and shoes get hidden somewhere around the yard and the kiddos try and find them. It was so much fun to catch up with loved ones and for the kids to have a great time making friends with Jared's cousins' kids.
^^There is a scenic winding driveway to their home flanked by beautiful scrub oak forests. I'm not sure I really appreciated how unique and stunning this location was the first time Jared brought me here. So much of the backdrop of Jared's childhood summers was spent here on the "Layton Compound" where Jared's grandparents and two of their kids' families each had a home. Now it's just Jared's aunt and uncle here, but it's still a special place.
We had another extended family gathering the next day with my Haines family. Our schedules are definitely a lot fuller since we moved to Utah, which is busy and wonderful. I'm so grateful to add this fullness and connection to our lives. Sure beats sitting home with bored kids all summer.
^^After Alice got her face painted last week, she got ahold of some markers and gave herself "witch paint." She was NOT happy about having to wash it off and had bruised-looking remnants for several days. This girl is truly a fun time.
^^We went to Harvey Park+splash pad to play and get snow cones. Unfortunately we also came home with a bee sting on Alice's foot. The good news is that she didn't go into anaphylactic shock! I was glad this happened with a snow cone shack nearby. Some blue raspberry and tiger's blood did the trick of distracting her while the ibuprofen and benadryl did their work (she didn't have a serious allergic reaction, but she did have a few light splotches appear on her face, and with our allergy-prone girlie I don't take any chances).
^^Alice's first hair cut at a salon! I love Alice's long hair, but it was becoming a real pain in the summer. For whatever reason, Alice loves to smear "product" all over her hair any chance she gets. This product could be anything, from hand soap to sunscreen to lotion to worse. She finds it, she smears it. And at her current age, it is tough to get her sitting still long enough to get a good, thorough washing and brushing of her hair. Combine that with swimming season and daily sunscreen applications . . . it just felt like a good time for a big haircut. The hairdresser initially cut her bangs just above her eyebrows, but I told him to go shorter so we won't have to worry about another haircut until nearly fall. It's short but it suits her! A sassy haircut for a sassy gal:
^^Lots of coloring this week. We usually keep our markers hidden away because Alice will do allll sorts of creative things with them (including eat them). But they were so novel that they kept the kids entertained for hours this week. It's time to put them away for another few months now, with fresh marker on several pieces of furniture and clothing. Luckily most of it is washable.
^^Last but not least, the Utah Valley Parade of Homes has begun! This is the first time we have lived in Utah to attend the parade in many, many years. The attention to detail is spectacular. This is one of mine and Jared's favorite activities to do together, and it's especially inspiring when we have the prospect of our "forever home" coming up in the near future. With wallpapers and lots of trim and color in style, I am really enjoying the homes this year (we've only been to two by our house so far--39 more to go).

Sassy Haircut

Happy summer! It's Jack's first week off of school. He is currently sick with a cold, which makes sense considering how many public pools, parks, and splash pads we visited this week. A Utah summer with kids is more fantastic than I ever pictured, and I grew up here. There are SO MANY incredible splash pad parks really close to us. All free. It's less hassle than a pool. It's low-key for me. The kids love it. You can stay dry if you want and sit on a bench on the side, or if it's a hot day you can get a little wet. We also have reservoirs and the Thanksgiving Point attractions. Compared to the last few places we've lived, this is a whole different ball-game. We could go somewhere different every single day and never run out of things to do all summer.

But, it isn't all rainbows and unicorns. I'm still fairly down and out with the POTS. Jared recorded my blood pressure and heart rates during a few at-home tests and verified, "Yup, it's definitely POTS." Luckily, on the whole, things have mostly been getting better since then. I have started drinking lots more water and electrolytes. Taking it easy if I can when I feel dizzy. And getting on a better allergy medicine, because apparently there's a strong tie between seasonal allergies and POTS flares. All of these things have been helping. I'm definitely not feeling 100% yet, but I will get into a specialist and see what they have to say. They may put me on an elimination diet, or maybe some medicine. We'll see. It will be my summer of health and wellness.

Some good has come from this diagnosis. I did need a kick in the pants to start drinking more water and eating more healthy. Since we moved to Utah my breakfasts have mostly consisted of whatever reject nubbins my kids didn't eat during their breakfasts. Maybe a pop-tart if Jared brought one home from the doctor's lounge. I was honestly too tired and stressed to make a healthy breakfast for myself. In hindsight that was the POTS. But eating worse was never going to help me feel better. So now I've been having Jared throw an extra egg in with his breakfast before he leaves for work. Then there's a bit of scrambled egg ready for me when I wake up that I eat with an avocado and a handful of arugula with oil and vinegar. This absolutely has NOT been the norm for me during the last year, but I'll admit that I feel a lot better starting my day eating a healthy breakfast in the sunshine on our deck before my kids wake up than I used to feel. Onward and upward. And now for some pictures from our week:

^^We had a beach day at Tibble Fork on Saturday morning. We will admit to it being lots more effort than it was worth. It was windy and the water was freezing. The kids were grumpy and fighting over toys. Basically no relaxation occurred. But at least there was sunshine!! Next time we will stick to a splash pad. I could see this being worth it if we invited cousins and it was a little warmer. Sure is pretty up there though.
^^On Memorial Day we went to the Sheepdog Competition in Midway. Another may-not-have-been-worth-it outing, but I'm glad we went. I loved watching the sheepdogs during the herding competitions. The kids loved getting their faces painted. Jared loved going home at the end😅 When the kids are older it will go better.
^^Alice's entire splash pad personality.
^^Thanksgiving Point Farm day. A little too hot and exhausting. Splash Pads are a better speed for us on a typical summer morning. When I get overheated the POTS flares up, is what I learned this week.
^^Jack has two new pets--two rolly polly bugs he found in our backyard that he named "Rolly" and "Jaimey." They may need to escape back into our backyard soon or I fear they will cook in that windowsill.
