We spent the last week in Utah having the BEST time with family. The reason we made the trip was for an extended Roper family reunion on my side of the family. I've been to dozens of family reunions done all sorts of different ways in my life, and this reunion put on by my Grandma Roper is my favorite one for sure. It's one full day each summer at a farm in Northern Utah, tucked into a hidden valley loaded with activities: Giant downhill slip-n-slide, tractor train for the kids, a playground in the sand, swings, big pavilion for meals, zip lines, and a pond loaded with diving platforms, more ziplines, sand, slide, floating platforms, rings, climbing wall, rope swing, and lots of little kayaks. Everything's homemade and pretty janky, but wow it's a good time. Nothing is scheduled out besides meals, but we all end up doing the same activities at the same time all together anyway. It's my favorite day of the year and the only day where I get out of the car and then don't have to do anything for my child all day but lather a new layer of sunscreen on him every few hours. He has so much fun playing with all the little kids there, and me and Jared have a blast playing and catching up with all my Roper relatives. At the end of the day I leave happy and maybe wanting a bit more time to catch up with cousins, but also so pumped to go home (to my parents' home) to a familiar bed.
^^Backing up just a bit because I'm too lazy to rearrange pictures. I put a LOT of preparation into the 14-hour drive from Washington to Utah and it panned out pretty well. I had a visual timer for Jack and a "surprise bag" every hour with a new little toy in it. Most were little tiny dinosaurs from a big dinosaur bucket. I also brought magnatiles and a cookie sheet so he could make little houses for his dinos. This kept him busy for the first third of the drive, and then the rest of the time was mostly screen time and a nap. We've come a looooong way from the miserable newborn road trips. Felt good to get a successful, long roadtrip under our belt before we go back to the baby times. I bought a potty chair for this trip in case of emergencies, but homeboy didn't ask to go potty even ONCE. Very uncharacteristic. He only had to pee once when we made him while we were outside stretching our legs on the side of the freeway in this beautiful southern Idaho field:
^^This view makes me miss Wyoming a lot. Looooove me a big field and a wide open sky with a little mountain and a big sunset. Now here are a few more shots form the reunion:
After the reunion we spent a week in Utah Valley at my parents' house visiting family and hitting our favorite UV spots. One of Jared's favorite hangs is Utah Lake. Even when it's 100 degrees outside and there's no one else out on the entire lake because the water quality is questionable. Jared was living his best life running through these shallows:
One afternoon we went to the dinosaur museum at BYU. Jack has gotten all of his cousins in on the dino craze so this was a highlight. The number one highlight of the trip was "playing with Asher." At the end of every day I'd ask Jack what his favorite part of the day was and every single time the answer was "playing with Asher." Love these cuties:
Then we popped by the Bean Museum because, why not, and then we ran to the BYU bookstore for Jared to grab a planner. We stopped for milk and cookies in the bookstore too. It was very cute.
^^That lovely pregnancy exhaustion glow.
On one of our last nights, the boy cousins and their dads went on their first short lil' backpacking trip with Grandpa Haines. I was glad to be back home having a girls' night with my mom and some sisters in law, but I did end up hiking up to see the camp the next morning. Mostly I did this because a Dry Canyon hike was on my "must do in Utah" list and this was our last morning there. They just happened to be where I was going to hike anyway, which worked out because Jack was very nervous for his first camping experience and I think he was comforted by the promise that I'd come visit his campsite in the morning. I planned on just saying hi and then finishing the loop by myself and taking a nap before they got home, but I absolutely should have known that Jack would not let me leave his sight and would end up hiking back with me. At first I was annoyed but honestly I envisioned this very moment hiking down Dry Canyon trail with my little boy before I even had kids. Will be more fun next time when I'm not 7 months pregnant in 90-degree heat. But still a good time.
^^Me and my kiddos hiking my favorite trail all together for the first time.
^^Final day shenanigans. I'm so glad we were able to stay long enough to celebrate my dad and brother's birthdays and have one last family party. The night ended with me dumping a bowl of nausea-busting oatmeal all over myself and then breaking down in exhausted pregnancy tears and going to sleep early instead of finishing out family game night. The exhaustion and hiking pains and nausea caught up with me, but a good night's sleep did a world of good and we cranked out the drive home pretty smoothly the next day. It was NOT enough time in Utah (next time we'll have to have a lunch date, Grandma!). And I wish I hadn't been so beat that last night so I could've finished out game night and watched some Pioneer Day fireworks from the Dry Canyon parking lot. But we'll be back, Utah! Until next time.

Utahcation 2022

Hello from my *official* third trimester! Lots of journally pregnancy stuff these next two paragraphs, so skip to the third if you just want to hear about our Independence Day. I've been rounding up to the third trimester for almost a month now, and according to me I'm at 30 weeks today. But this last week I had my "28 week" appointment so now it's official official. I passed my glucose test, but my bloodwork results came back with some pretty definitive anemia. Which honestly I'm glad to know because now there's an explanation for the impossible, unmanageable levels of fatigue I've been having for several weeks now. Any productivity levels I picked up during the second trimester are nowhere to be found anymore. (And this explains why I started wallpapering the nursery 3 weeks ago and now nearly a month later we are barely halfway done, yikes. I have like one panel in me at a time and then I have to take a break for several days. It's going to be so cute when it's done though!) My doctor prescribed me an iron supplement and lots of rest, and he and Jared assure me that if I'm diligent to take the iron every day I'll have my levels back up in a month. Which feels like a long ways away but once again, at least I'm not barfing!!!! Exhaustion over barfing every day of the week, always and forever, amen. (Still on the nausea meds though--I think I'm as weaned down as I'm going to get since I tried to cut down more this week and it didn't go well. Glad they're helping and that they double as allergy meds.)

Hopefully getting my iron levels up will be enough to boost me back into a realm of semi-normalcy, because my sleep is taking a HIT now that we're in the third trimester. This happened with Jack too. My round ligament pains and Braxton Hicks come on months before birth and are pretty aggressive. Every night I'm waking up to either bad cramps (round ligament pain) or the most awful charley horses imaginable. Then I'm also frequently waking up to allergies and/or asthma (an air purifier in our room has been helping a lot in this area though). And as of this weekend, my uterus has officially encroached on my bladder enough that we are in chronic interstitial cystitis mode. Booooooo. I was really hoping by some miracle it wouldn't come to this. I have a painful bladder condition called interstitial cystitis that I've learned a lot about over the past 8 years and can keep very well controlled when I'm not pregnant. But with my bladder under constant strain now I'm starting to have daily flare-ups (a flare-up basically feels like an intense and sudden UTI). With Jack they were so bad that anytime I woke up during the night I'd have to take a hot bath while sipping a full quart of ice water to try and relieve some of the pain so I could fall back asleep. Lots of 3 a.m. baths back then, and I'm sure many 3 a.m. baths in my future. But for now my best defense is drinking water nonstop, and so far that's keeping the IC more mild than last time (last time I was overwhelmingly nauseous the full 40 weeks so I physically could not drink enough water to stay ahead of the IC). Overall it looks like 3rd trimester might be turbulent, but I'm still doing sooooo much better than I was at this point with Jack. Baby girl is kicking up a storm. It's fun that Jack can feel her now (Jared too, but extra sweet with Jack).

Let's do some 4th of July pics to finish up! Jared's mom and brother ended up coming to spend the afternoon/evening with us after all which made the holiday more fun. We had a potluck with ward friends for lunch, then when Jared's family arrived we drove into Arlington to watch a parade, then we threw together a yummy dinner and watched fireworks from our driveway. I wasn't expecting much, but WOW. Granite Falls delivered. There are no restrictions on fireworks here that I'm aware of, and our neighbors did not hold back. The evening started with some respectable driveway displays before it got dark (Jared's mom sprung for a big box of fireworks that Jack loved watching--sparklers were his favorite). Then after they left and Jack went to bed, it started to get dark and the aerials came out to play. At one point I felt like we were watching 3 professional firework shows at once--2 off in the distance and one just down the street from us so we were watching from directly beneath them. It was the first time in my memory that I didn't wait for the fireworks to end to turn in for the night. Impressive displays just kept going for hours and hours. Eventually I was like, "I think I've seen enough big fireworks" and we went to bed. Savvy is usually a bit skittish on July 4th, but the fireworks were so constant that I think she got used to them and I swear I caught her intently watching a firework showdown out our bedroom window while I was falling asleep haha.

^^A perfect July 4 afternoon with rocket pops on the patio.
^^I love being a glamorous runway model! But really I have no regrets continuing to wear this polyester jumpsuit that is ridiculous AF on my current bump but supes comfy.
^^Anything too loud or that went up in the air sent Jack running for cover behind Grandma's chair. He still enjoyed them though!
^^I somehow got dragged on a hike up the Mountain Loop Highway. I truly do not know how they got me up here. Non-pregnant Laura loves nothing more than a good hike, but fatigued pregnant Laura was regretting this from the moment I got in the car. I felt better after about 20 minutes of hiking, and it was a beautiful trail, but we turned back after probably a mile so I could get ready for my OB appointment and, you know, not be hiking anymore. Please enjoy this outfit that looks like the part in The Santa Clause when Scott Calvin blows up overnight and none of his clothes fit so he ends up in tight gray sweats with his belly poking out at the doctor's office haha. Time to put the non-maternity clothes to rest methinks:
^^That outtie belly button tho.
^^Jack getting into baby mode with his beloved Bun Bun. Loved finding this in my bed.
^^I love watching this iconic father-son duo together. They are the cutest. Jared takes Jack to pickleball at the church every Thursday evening for his calling. This was my first week coming to watch and it was everything. Jack was SO excited to show me how to play after months of going without me. Love my boys so much.

Oh! I can't believe I almost forgot! I don't have any pictures but we celebrated our 9th wedding anniversary this week too. Since we had our OB appointment the day before our anniversary and Jared took the day off, we went out for hot wings and gelato in downtown Kirkland after our appointment. It was very cute and simple and perfect. Much better than when I tried to plan an extravagant anniversary getaway last year and it ended with us sleeping on the hard wood floor of a black-widow-infested hut. Memories. We're planning to do some kind of trip for our 10th anniversary next year so it felt right to keep things low-key this time. It's been a wild and wonderful 9 years <3
Granite Falls 4th of July! (and 3rd trimester stuff)

Happy 4th! I'm writing this on the evening of July 3rd. We don't have lots of plans for Independence Day, but we're doing a BBQ potluck lunch with some ward friends and then hopefully we'll find a parade or fireworks show at some point. Jared's dad is out of town and his mom is sick, plus we'll be driving down to his parents' on Tuesday for an OB appointment/anniversary date, so we're doing this holiday solo.

My fatigued pregnant girlie era is still going strong and evolving into my annoyed-all-the-time pregnant girlie era. Probably a combo of pregnancy hormones, not getting enough sleep (pregnant Laura needs 10+ hours or she is grumps city), and the aches and pains that come on with the 3rd trimester are not treating me well. I'm also feeling really homesick now that we've hit one year in Washington? I don't even know where for--sometimes Wyoming, sometimes Utah. Washington is gorgeous and we love being close to family for the first time in a while. At the same time, we feel most at home in a dry/desert climate, and probably even more than that, I miss having wide-open trails literally right outside our front door like we had in our Wyoming prairie (or my Utah foothills). If I could plop that prairie down across the street from our current house in Washington, the homesickness might immediately disappear. That meditative daily sunset prairie walk was really good for my mental health. Also for Savvy dog. There just isn't a good equivalent here--anything that comes close requires a bit of a drive, and involves a trail that meanders through dense forest. Again, gorgeous, but a little unnerving. I always feel like someone's watching me or could pop out from behind a tree (one time I was taking Savvy for a walk and spotted a homeless man watching me from under a nearby tree, neat!).

On a completely different note, last week we spent 2 days and a night at Great Wolf Lodge in Washington--an indoor water park about 2 hours south. It was important to me that we have one Jack-centered family trip this summer before baby girl arrives. Jared agreed, so when he got off of work on Monday we drove to the hotel and spent the evening and following day at the water park. Jack LOVED it. Worth every minute of terrible hotel sleep to watch his face light up and hear his pure little squeals of delight when we stuck him in the deep end with a life jacket and taught him how to doggie paddle around. The actual cutest Jack moments I've witnessed this year. We're probably going to get a YMCA pass for the month of August so Jack can get more swimming time and I can enjoy some MUCH needed gym childcare moments of silence this summer. Amen and Amen. Here are some pics from Great Wolf Lodge!

^^Jack spent most of his time in the kiddie pool areas, making friends with the other kiddies and going down the kiddie slides. But his biggest squeals of delight were always when he was paddling around in the deep end with Jared.
^^Great Wolf Lodge has lots of "events" and "activities" you can do if you want, almost like a cruise ship for kids. Jack was adamant that we go to character story time and the bedtime dance party, but then he saw a bunch of kids with light-up bubble wands from the gift store and his evening was ruined because he wanted one so badly (we checked and they were $30, woof). A little souvenir disappointment seems on par for any classic family vacation, so we rolled with it the best we could and told him they were only for kids with birthdays and maybe we could come back on his birthday so he could get one. (aka buy one cheap on amazon and bring it with us--sign up for my parenting seminars below!)
^^Day 2! You can see the soullessness in Jared's eyes from a terrible night's sleep. We rebounded quick enough and had a fun day of arcade games and swimming.
^^The look on Jack's face when he went into a sheer panic and told us he needed to find a restroom IMMEDIATELY and then get a cold pack for his tummy. Probably a combo of travel food and swallowing gross chlorine water. There were many BMs that day. So glad he's potty trained. Love me a 4 year old.
^^Halfway through the second day Jared made the iffy decision of convincing Jack to go on a "boat ride" with him down a fast, twisty tube run. Looked super fun to me, but pregnant ladies aren't allowed on the slides, so I waited at the bottom to capture this precious moment (zoom in for a look of sheer terror on Jack's face). He was technically tall enough to ride, but just barely, and he's tall for his age. I probably should've talked Jared out of this one, but I'm glad Jared at least got to go on one big slide. Probably wouldn't attempt this one again until Jack's at least 6 or 7.

Overall it was a great family trip! Would recommend Great Wolf Lodge if you have one near you. I think the best time to go is in the winter using a Groupon. And it's probably most fun for kids ages 6-12 so they can enjoy more of the bigger slides, but we still had a blast. Can't speak to the food--we brought our own in because we cheap cheap. Until next time!
Great Wolf Lodge

We are about to head out for some family fun when Jared gets home from work so I'll make this snappy. Here are some snapshots from our week:

^^It's been summer weather here. Jack and I spent an afternoon at a nearby river beach. Lots of pb&j picnics for us, and lots of playing "dinosaurs."
^^After an especially tiring day in the sun, Jack fell asleep holding his arms up like this, and they stayed in this position for at least 2 hours every time I went to peek on him before I went to bed haha.
^^Backyard hangs. Wish I was on this blanket with them, but my seasonal allergies showed up in a big way this week so I'm trying to keep my backyard hangs confined to the patio to keep my misery to a minimum. All my nausea meds are also antihistamines at this point, which help with allergies, so definitely a more minimal allergy season than usual for me which is nice.

That's it! Nothing crazy to report. I'm getting very little done during weekdays, but we ordered some wallpaper for the nursery and it was nice to have Jared's help putting it up over the weekend. We've never wallpapered before and it's been a steep learning curve so we're not even half done, but I'll be sure to share pictures as the nursery comes together (might be a few months--my pregnancy productivity levels are record low and Jared's got a very busy schedule so Saturdays are about all we have to work with). We both love the look of wallpaper but it's been a bit of a headache doing a whole room so we probably won't attempt it again for a few more years, or when we get into a more "forever home" type of situation. Very glad we went for it in the nursery though.

Backyard Hangs

I just woke up from the best pregnancy nap. It was so needed and so good I could cry. Jared gets home early on Mondays. When Jack was in preschool we used that as our date time, but now that Jack's home and I am in my FATIGUED era, I think I'm claiming Monday afternoons for my weekly pregnancy nap. It's pretty difficult for me to squeeze in a nap under normal circumstances because (a) Jack doesn't nap anymore and (b) I desperately want/need to use his hour of quiet time to do something productive. But man, I am a tired girlie. Again, I'll take exhausted over sick every day of the week. Still celebrating feeling pretty darn good over here (pretty good on meds I should say--tried skipping doses this last week and the nausea came creeping right back in). I will say, I'm starting to get into the groove of summer and despite the exhaustion, I think we're going to make it through just fine. Here are some snapshots from our week!
^^Jared found out that he requested Friday off and we have no memory of why. At first I was bugged because I want to save as much of his vacation time as possible for postpartum, but we spent the day successfully thrifting for nursery things and then resting at home and it was very nice. Jack remains obsessed (honestly not strong enough of a word) with dinosaurs, so I picked him up this Magic Tree House dinosaur book at the thrift store and it was the sweetest things watching him get drawn into it and snuggling up while me and Jared took turns reading it with him. I haven't been pushing the reading thing too much, but now that summer's here and I'm dying for more alone time, I'm low-key trying to get him more into reading and obsessed with beginner chapter books in hopes that he'll become a little bookworm and I can have more time to get things done. It's a long shot, I know. We all need a dream. Honestly I wouldn't even mind if I'm the one who has to read the chapter books to him. Anything for a laying down activity while pregnant. Hopefully next summer baby girl is exciting enough to occupy Jack's attention away form me some of the time. He's desperate enough for a playmate that I walked into this situation last week:
^^Jack was bribing Savvy to chase him into his room with graham crackers, and then he held her captive by throwing her little pieces of graham crackers periodically while he told her dinosaur stories. Then when the cracker would run out they'd both run downstairs and grab another one, then both run back upstairs to continue. (Also yes, this bunk bed situation is childhood magic. The best furniture purchase I've ever made. We got Beddy's zip-up bedding so no bunk bed regrets over here.)
^^Father's Day! We've got some pretty great fathers to celebrate in our life. Me and Jack made German pancakes for breakfast (Jared usually makes German Pancakes every Sunday morning because if it were up to me we'd be having cold cereal, but German Pancakes Sunday is an important thing to Jare). Jack wrote Jared this card that says "To Dad From Jack, I love you." The day before, Jared cut Jack's hair and now Jack has Dumb and Dumber bangs haha.

For Father's Day Jack got his dad some dinosaur racing cars. We're trying to just let Jack play with them when Jared's home and asks Jack to play with him so Jack doesn't think gift giving is about buying the other person toys you hope to keep for yourself. Although honestly, I've probably done that myself a few times. I meannnn my Father's Day gift to him was a weed whacker. He seems pumped about it.

Ok I'm off to enjoy a popsicle on the patio now. Summertime has finally decided to show up in Washington! And by "summer," I mean highs in the 60s and low 70s, but at least it's sunny. Not hating it.

Chill Summer

Happy summer! Not gonna lie, we're less than a week in and summer is kicking my TRASH. I'm feeling decent most of the time so I'm trying to hold onto that and be grateful that at least I'm not going stir crazy AND barfing. I was kind of excited for Jack to be done with preschool so I could live in sweats for the rest of my pregnancy and not worry about getting him ready either, but woof. I forgot what it's like to be home with a Jack all day every day, especially now that he's taking zero naps per day and it's a struggle to enforce his one hour of quiet time in the afternoon. He's an awesome kid and so much fun at this age, but he is a big-time extrovert (energized by and loves to be around people 100% of the time) and I am a big-time introvert (energized by alone time always--this served me well through Jared's med schooling haha). He would prefer my attention every minute of the day if he could get it, but nope. Over the weekend I made and printed out a summer schedule to hopefully get us in a better groove. The weather is getting nicer and we're starting to have sunny days here and there, so I'm pumped to be able to spend more time playing in our backyard soon.
^^There's a cute donut shop in Lake Stevens that we've been meaning to try since we moved here a year ago, but me and Jared always think of it during our Monday dates, and it's closed on Mondays. We stopped by over the weekend half an hour before they closed, and even though we only paid for a half dozen donuts, we were the only ones in the shop and the girl working there stuffed a box full of over a dozen donuts of all kinds. And they weren't just quantity donuts, they were quality donuts. So good. Some of the best donuts I've ever had. We walked our box across the street to a picnic table by a park and the lake. Gr8 Saturday vibes.
^^Post water-balloon fight popsicles.
^^We made a very basic volcano and it killed all the dinosaurs. Yay.
^^Jack blowing me a kiss from the window on his last day of preschool. We had such a great experience with this preschool and he'll be going back next year. I'm sad about all the friends he's made that graduated to kindergarten but I know he'll have no trouble making new friends next year.
^^A good $17 Costco purchase.

That's about it! Nothing too exciting coming up this week. Today we're going to Jared's brother's high school graduation. Then I need to decide on a wallpaper and/or paint for the nursery so I can take advantage of these last few functional 2nd-trimester weeks to get some projects done. Third trimester was pretty miserable with Jack so trying to keep my expectations for what I'll be able to get done in check.

The Summer Scaries

Hey-o! We just got off a wonderful weekend spent with my brother Jordan's family who was visiting us here in Washington. They lived in a town about half an hour north of where we live now a few years back so it was fun to show them around Granite Falls, have the best sibling/cousin times, and they got to visit some of their old friends and hangs in Mt. Vernon. They picked an absolutely perfect time to visit--I've been feeling really pretty good for about a week now, my belly is still at a manageable size, and the current Washington temperatures are *chef's kiss*.

The forecast was mostly rainy during their time here, but we did get a sunny day on Saturday that we spent lounging on our own little riverside beach for several hours. When we pulled into the usually-empty parking lot by the river, we were surprised to find the lot overflowing with dozens upon dozens of cars. Apparently there was some kind of church party taking place. Everyone we walked by was speaking Russian, or possibly Ukranian? Maybe it was a refugee gathering? No idea but it was really cool, and in a beautiful spot. Almost felt like we'd stepped into another country for a bit. Luckily the party was in one central space, and after hiking about a quarter mile along the river we found a quiet, expansive beach all to ourselves. Much of it was rock, but there was also a lot of great sand for the kiddos to dig around in. My brother Jordan is the GOAT and carried 2 of our outdoor dining chairs the whole way to the beach so all the adults could have a chair to sit on, since we only had 2 camping chairs. We had a great time digging, throwing rocks, picnicking, and enjoying the perfect weather.

Only kid pics today because the rest of the pics are on my DSLR (I'll share those next week), or are pictures with me in the center wearing, er, ill-fitting clothing haha. Glad Jordan and Amanda took several family pictures of us so I could catch a minor wardrobe malfunction that's probably been going on for the past 2-3 months of pregnancy bod changes. Didn't realize it, but this homegirl desperately needs to throw away the two bras I've been clinging to since HIGH SCHOOL and are now not only the wrong size, but also curling at the edges and you can see the full outline of them through most of my shirts these days. Yay. Funny how you can go months without catching things like that in a mirror, but then when you see yourself in pictures you're like, "Oh. Yup. Cool." I'm getting PUMPED for summer to start this week so I can live in Jared's shirts and an array of oversized t-shirt dresses instead of having to put on maternity jeans *shudders* for preschool pickup. I've been nervous for 3 months of no preschool, but our backyard and patio are all set for success, and we found a big inflatable splash pad for $19 at Costco today, so bring it on.

I could keep rambling but I am EXHAUSTED. Jack has always been a terrible sleeper when we travel or have guests over. He's been making improvements in the sleep department since turning 4 so I truly didn't think we'd have any issues with family staying here over the weekend, especially since we have ample room in this house to spread out across 5 bedrooms, and because he's been excited for months to have a sleepover with Asher, but boy was I wrong. He ended up sobbing and sleeping on our bedroom or bathroom floor for all of the four nights, and on one of the nights he was awake from 12:30-4:00 a.m. absolutely inconsolable and absolutely unable to tell us what was wrong. At least he does really great with guests during the days. We've decided that 4 nights is the perfect amount of time to have houseguests staying over (at least during this phase of having a young kid who hates sleep). It was long enough to have some good outings and also some casual days at home. Adrenaline carried us great through 4 days of sleep turbulence, and then about 12 hours after they left, me and Jack crashed and burned. He's currently back in his own room sleeping, so I'm feeling good about getting his sleep back on track quickly. It was worth it for all the laughs, meals, games, and memories shared with family. Jack was immediately sad when Asher and Annie left, so I'm glad he has one last day of preschool this week to play with friends his age before the summer of Jack and Mom begins. Gonna be a good time.
