It's been a busy day! I almost forgot a blog post but here I am, squeezing it in at the last minute. It's trickier to post from my phone, so i will leave you with a few pictures from the week and say I will see you again soon :)

^^Two kiddos engrossed in their work.
^^Morning Bluey snuggles

The kids are currently BOTH sleeping peacefully at the same time in the car, which has never happened. So with that I'll say to all a goodnightšŸ˜˜
Goodnight Post

Today I thought it might be fun to make a list of all the places Jared and I have lived over the past decade, and decide what is the #1 thing about each place we would take  to create our perfect dream location, if that were possible. This isn't going to be totally comprehensive because we've got football practice in 20 minutes, but it will be a fun recap of our last decade for me!

#1: Utah Valley, Utah

Some of our favorite parts: Family, Dry Canyon, the mountains, Utah Lake, family-friendly restaurants and parks.

#2: Grenada, West Indies

Some of our favorite parts: Walks, white-sand beaches with calm turquoise water, exotic fresh fruits, apartment with private veranda looking out to our own iguana-filled rainforest, slow pace.

#3: Decatur, Georgia

Some of our favorite parts: Food (the BEST bbq and wings), nicest people, proximity to cool places, gorgeous boardwalks everywhere

#4: Bar Nunn, Wyoming
Some of our favorite parts: Prairie, population size, cost of living, no traffic, extremely family friendly (with lots of great parks), Casper Mountain, best thrift store

#5: Snohomish County, Washington

Some of our favorite parts: Temperature range/distribution of seasons, stunning rivers and lakes (and trees) everywhere, close to Jared's parents, quick access to mountains, lakes, rivers, ocean, and forest.

I'm running out of time but now I'm going to pull one favorite thing from every place that would make the dream location for us if we could mash it all together. We're going to say that "near family" is a given, so I'll choose something else from each catoegory.

From Utah Valley: Dry Canyon (I feel like this also grants a view of Utah Lake since the view is a key part of the Dry Canyon experience)

From Grenada: White sand beaches with warm turquoise water (duh)

From Georgia: The food! (insane southern BBQ and best wings ever in our town)

From Wyoming: I'm torn between prairie and population/city size. I think if I'm getting Dry Canyon from Utah, I'll be ok without my prairie walk. I choose population/city size! (Casper had about 55k people when we lived there. Big enough city for tons of parks and stores and restaurants and even swimming pools, but small enough population that there was never ANY traffic under any circumstance.)

From Washington: Yearly distribution of seasons/temperature range. The season and temperature swings here are perfect. It rarely gets colder than 30 degrees in the winter, but there are a handful of beautiful, full snows. In the summer it rarely gets hotter than the 80s, but you might get a small handful of 100-degree days. The spring and fall are long and amazing.

Build Our Own Dream Location

For today's post I was planning to do a comparison of all the places we've lived over the past decade, and then do a "build our dream home location" using our personal favorite elements of each one. Maybe March Madness bracket style. But I underestimated how much time that would take, so hopefully I'll finish it for tomorrow's post. Since I had about ten minutes before I needed to pick Jack up from preschool and then drop him off at a church friend's birthday party, I did an impromptu recording playing the same "Tarantella" from a previous post, but on our new piano instead of our old one for comparison. I hope the sound comes through ok! It sounded a little brassy on my phone, but in real life the new piano plays just beautifully. The sound is softer and smoother than our old piano. A senior missionary couple from our ward will be picking up our old piano for their mission home in a week or so.

I hope you are all having a lovely day! We are enjoying sunshine and spring blossoms here. I am writing this blog post on our back patio to soak it in before the cloudy skies and rain return tomorrow.

New Piano Recital

We signed Jack up for flag football! It's actually very embarrassing because we named our child Jack Lambert, knowing absolutely nothing about football and not realizing that one of the most famous football players of all time is named Jack Lambert. So now I'm pretty sure his coaches think we're LeGiT fOoTbAlL people and are intimidated by us even though we're actually huge football newbs. Jared asked the coach if there would be practices next week during spring break, and the coach was like, "Uh, uh, I don't know. We can if you want! We can!" and then he was all, "Sorry we weren't running drills out there, it's just limited in what we can do with a bunch of 5 year olds." And we were like, "Oh, no we just wanted to leave town during spring break. Also wut r drills?" Haha

Jack had his first practice last night and LOVED it. I went back and forth on signing him up so many times. On the one hand, me and Jared don't really want our kids playing tackle football when they get older (because injuries) so never planned to put him in any kind of football. On the other hand, Jack really loves going to our town's high school football games, and all he wants to do lately is play tag for 12 hours a day, and me and Jared are tired. Flag football feels pretty close to tag, and this way he can learn teamwork and have his peers tire him out instead of us, and have his coaches tell him what to do instead of him trying to tell us what to do. Win win win.

A lot of the practice was dividing the team into two groups and letting the kids take turns running the ball while the other team tried to pull a flag off them. Then at the end they played a round of freeze tag. I thought the tag portion would be his favorite part, but he was grinning ear to ear after running the ball and he said his favorite part was when he almost pulled a runner's flag off. He was absolutely in his element. So at least for this spring, we have a football boi! The football practice was actually a lot more legit than his soccer practices ever were, and the coach brought pizza for the boys at the end, and there will be games every Saturday until June. I don't know who's more excited, Jack or me, but it's going to be a fun season. Here are a few pictures and a video of Jack running the ball at the end. Jack is the one holding the football in the first picture. He's wearing the gray jacket with the black sleeves, and an orange shirt peeking out the bottom.

Flag Football

It's a beautiful week in the Pacific Northwest. We have a 14-hour drive to Utah coming up soon, and while I'm nervous about how it will go with a baby and a 5-year-old (not TOO nervous since we have survived much worse when it comes to road trips), it feels like a gateway drive. If we can pass this roadtrip test, weekend adventures will seem a lot more accessible than they have since having our Baby Alice 6 months ago. With summer around the corner, that will be a good feeling.

I will be doing multiple blog posts this week, so with not too much to report on from this last week, I will touch on the highlights in the captions to these pictures:

^^Alice is starting to sit unassisted! She only lasts a couple of seconds before she topples over, but she is getting more balanced each day.

^^A mediocre picture memorializing an historic day: The day Jack spent FOUR HOURS uninterrupted playing Risk by himself with his stuffed animals, and then was sad when we pulled him away to eat dinner with us. It felt like that one time (literally only one time lol) when Jack slept a five-hour stretch as a baby, but I actually got a worse night sleep than usual because I was so paranoid that I kept going to check if he was still breathing every 30 minutes.

The Risk Backstory: Jared taught Jack the basic rules of Risk several weeks ago. Jack had been obsessed with playing board games with us, but we were getting tired of checkers and chess and Bang! We decided to add Risk to the repertoire (mostly because I knew he'd keep very entertained playing with the little Risk guys like tiny soldier toys). Sure enough, he loved it and wanted us to play it with him for several days. Eventually we got sick of it because he didn't really have the rules figured out and, let's be honest, it's an extremely long game. Too long for more than once-yearly play in my opinion. So we hid it away until he forgot about it for a while. Well, this weekend he remembered and wanted to play again. We told him we'd play it for a Saturday family game night. Jared's parents and brother were going to stop by so we tricked them into staying to play. It was a bonafide Risk night, and Jared's dad does NOT go easy on the little guy (for the better--I go easy on Jack way too often because it makes the game go faster and keeps the mood lighter). He made sure rules were followed and it turned into quite the game. When Jared's Dad wiped Jack out and took his cards, Jack handled it well but I could tell he was a little heartbroken so I told him my borders were open and he could join my team. The game continued until we called a truce at 10 p.m. and got Jack to sleep, much past his bedtime. He really had the rules figured out by then and had the best evening.

He was VERY grumpy the next day. The grumpiest he's maybe ever been. We got home from church and he was so tired that he couldn't function beyond moping and falling on the floor, but he couldn't stop thinking about Risk and begging us to play with him, and he flat-out refused to take a nap even though he knew he was exhausted. I even laid down in his bed with him, reading books and rubbing his arm and trying to get him to fall asleep. No dice. He just kept whining and begging me to play Risk with him. Eventually I told him, nicely, that me and Jared would not be playing Risk with him unless he chose to take a nap and woke up in a better mood, because we didn't want to play with someone who was just going to be snapping at us the whole time. That's not fun. He still was firmly in the "no nap, only Risk" camp. So I told him he could play Risk during his quiet time with his stuffed Bunny and Foxy, who often join him in games during his quiet time haha. He thought about it while I went to grab the game, and by the time I came back upstairs he was sitting on the top step with his stuffed animals, deep in thought. "I'm sorry Mom," he said. "I'll play Risk with my stuffed animals." Then he gave me a hug and got all set up in Jared's office. I set his quiet time timer for 90 minutes, and when it went off he ignored it and kept playing for 3 more hours. Jared went to check in on him at one point and he said, "I just want some alone time to play this with Foxy and Bunny." Incredible. He flipped a 180 and was his happy self the rest of the day. I even agreed to a shortened version of Risk with him after dinner and really enjoyed when he'd attack me from "Afghani-stand" (Afghanistan) or "Indoor-nesia" (Indonesia). I love that kid so much.

^^Shelves are ready to sand, prime, and paint! Then we'll add hardware and be done.
^^Another week, another picture of my dimply crib baby.
^^Alice is rolling alllll over to the point where we can no longer leave her unassisted on a couch or a bed. I put her in Jack's bunk bed up by the pillow. He was up there with her so I felt comfortable running downstairs to grab my water bottle. By the time I got upstairs she was headed straight for the slide, with half her body sticking out of the railing.
^^Another week another forest walk. This is my happy place here.
^^Proof of mom. Also proof of messy bedroom. On a whim we invented a new cleaning routine that worked well this week! Hopeful we can keep this one going and it will stick. The family economy chore chart we made fore Jack is so far not working great, mostly because I haven't been consistent and forget to remind Jack about the jobs. For the most part he doesn't do the jobs and doesn't worry much about not getting paid because the concept hasn't stuck yet. But this week on Saturday we wrote up a chart where every person was in charge of cleaning 2 areas downstairs and 2 areas upstairs. We helped Jack when needed but mostly he did great and was very helpful. Most of the house was clean by the end, and then we did a family activity.
^^Jared's mom got Alice some adorrrable spring clothes. The hat only stayed on for maybe 5 seconds but it was cute while it lasted.
^^Alice is a babbling girl now! It's "da-da-da-da-doe" all day long over here.

Spring Things

^^A really great baby mullet moment. Big Wayne's World vibes.

Happy 6 Months to Baby Alice! It feels like we're entering a new era (sitting up, solids, etc.), and even though the time is going too fast, I am loving this stage. It felt so far off when she was a little newborn, but now that we're here it happened in a blink.

Nicknames: Ali Girl, Baby Al, Larky Loo, Albert, Goose (the shortened form of an earlier nickname, "Baby McAngel McGuffet McStuffins McGoose"). Mostly she's just "Alice." Sometimes Jared will throw in an "Alicia Keys," but that is this only nickname I hear from him (Alice has always been his favorite name so makes sense). The rest is all me and my bizarre nicknaming tendencies. I just can't help what comes out of my mouth when I see my cute widdle baby gooses.

New milestones: We've started solids! So far she's loved butternut squash, applesauce, and pears. Whenever she tries a new food she makes the most concerned-looking face and furrows her little brow while she contemplates the flavor. Then after another try or two she's usually reaching for more. She prefers if we load up a spoon and hand it to her so she can feed herself. It makes it into her mouth about 40% of the time. More often than not she feeds it directly into her eyeball, nostril, or hair. It's very fun. I am loving having her sit at the table and eat with us at dinner time. Keeps her busier and happier than she used to be during dinner. She's still a little wobbly in her high chair, but her ability to balance and sit on her own is getting better every day.

Size: Starting to grow out of her 3-6 month clothes. Wearing size 2 diapers.

Tricks: Rolling all the time. Might be pushing up onto her knees soon. Starting to spend more time in her baby walker and activity bouncer. Easily flops out of her bath seat so we have to keep a keen eye on her all through bath time. She's so happy and smiley and makes the cutest noises during baths so we wouldn't want to miss a second of that anyway.

Jack is as in love with Alice as ever. He is the best big brother and loves finding new ways to play with and hold her. I might have mentioned this in a previous post, but sometimes he'll ask a question and I'll answer and he'll say, "No I was talking to Alice." And then I'm required to respond on behalf of Alice in a baby voice because I am not invited to their conversation, but also I'm required to be Alice's baby voice in the conversation. It's a good time.

Sleep is overall good! Last week I was only getting 3-hour stretches of sleep at a time and that was rough. This week she's doing a longer stretch again. Still eating twice per night and then going right back to sleep when she's done. I'm tired but not debilitatingly so, and I think I'll actually miss our special midnights together when this stage is over (though I am VERY excited for her to get down to one nightly feed). Naps are good too. On average she takes a one-hour nap in the morning, a two-hour nap in the afternoon (coinciding with Jack's preschool--amazing), and a 40-minute nap in the early evening. Usually at least one of those naps will be even longer. (Not really an Alice update, but my milk supply is slowly picking back up, hallelujah!)

The smiles and laughs are happening more and more often. My favorite times are when Alice wakes up happy and cooing, and then gives me the biggest smiles and kicks her legs when I walk into her room. She's the best. Her smiles, dimples, big soulful eyes and floppy hair get me every time. I love how she sleeps on her side or tummy, one arm curled around her little cow lovey. Jared and I have decided that the Lovey is the superior baby sleep crutch. Small enough to be portable and not get tangled up in. Easier for her to grab onto than the pacifier was. Doesn't mess with teeth. Also it's just so stinkin cute. Before bed we love checking in on Jack, who inevitably has one arm wrapped around his stuffed bunny, and then checking in on Alice, who has one arm around her cow lovey. Gets us right in the feels.

Alice is growing like a weed. Her hair is going to need a trim to even it out very soon! Her fingernails need to be trimmed ALL the time. They grow into little razor blades so quickly. Enjoy some pictures of our sweet Baby Alice, starting with a lil' photoshoot in a dress my talented mom hand-crocheted when I was a baby (there will be another, more summery photoshoot in this dress next month):

Our date buddy! Jared and I decided to retry our Valentine's date on the 10-year anniversary of when we got engaged (pi day). This time Jack was at school and Alice was a happy girl. Success! We grabbed some snacks at the grocery store and then drove up to our mountain lookout and talked about what our next 10 years together might look like, and how happy we are with how the last 10 years panned out.
^^Love this girlie! Mostly we're doing purees, but this butternut squash was soft as butter and she loved grabbing it with her hands and feeding herself.

^^A happy lady! My babies get happier as they learn more skills so Alice is thriving lately. Today Jack said, "I'm happy we have Alice. My favorite is when she smiles at me." We love having Alice Lark in our family so much.  <3
Alice Lark at 6 Months

We just got our "new" piano delivered and I am so excited about it! Jared's parents had a friend from their ward wanting to get rid of their piano. They were willing to part with it for free to anyone who could come pick it up. We only just got our thrift store piano a little over a year ago so I didn't think we were looking for a piano, but holy cow turns out we were. It is SUCH an upgrade. I'm not sure how old it is, but it's a nicer brand (Kawai), looks great, doesn't need to be tuned yet, and most importantly, she plays like an absolute dream. Since it was free, and since our last piano-moving situation was a huge headache, we decided to shell out for professional piano movers. DO THIS if you are moving a piano and you can. It cost a little over $300 but honestly I think we came out ahead. By the time we would have rented a truck, paid for the gas and the mileage (the piano was over an hour from our house), coordinated helpers for down there and up here, likely banged it around getting it off a truck, thereby requiring us to pay for a tuning . . . and I mean the headache saved alone was worth the cost to us. Especially knowing this is likely our "forever piano." Here she is:

We were thinking of asking the piano movers to move our old piano out after bringing the new one in. We didn't end up doing that (we'll try and sell it or give it to someone in our ward), but knowing it was a possibility I wanted to record myself playing on my first piano one last time. And now that I've figured out how to post video to my blog y'all will not be spared. This piano saved me during the first half of my pregnancy with Alice. I was very nauseous every minute of the day those first 25 weeks, and the only thing that could slightly take my mind off the nausea was practicing this song ("Tarantella" by Albert Pieczonka) on my little way-out-of-tune thrift store piano. I stopped taking piano lessons when I was maybe 11? This is one of the last pieces I remember learning. Fun to pick up where I left off 20 years ago. I'll always be grateful for the time spent with my $50 1970s Baldwin Acrosonic, with the little green tapes on the keys from last Christmas when I taught Jack how to play "Jingle Bells."

Here is the recording I'm choosing to post. I recorded myself 3 times. The first recording was a much better performance and much less rushed. But this one makes me laugh because it is real life with Jack rushing me and Savvy all up in everyone's business, so this is the one I'm posting. Maybe in a future week I'll upload another video playing on the new piano.
And here are some snapshots from our week:
^^Collecting stumps from the forest for our Tuesday afternoon date. Dozens of cut-up hunks of tree have been chilling off the pathway of my forest walk since a huge storm knocked a couple of trees across the path last year. Someone chopped them up and pushed them off into the forest. We decided to grab a few to put in our backyard for Jack to play on and jump from stump to stump. Yay nature playground. They've already been played on a bunch.
^^Jack's response to, "hop in the car for grocery pickup" lol
^^Sticker book fun
^^We got Alice this walker and it was a full-circle moment watching Jack pull her around the house in it. I used to pull Jack around in his walker when he was a baby for HOURS. Feeling grateful I have a bigger Jack to do the good work instead of me this time. He and Alice both get a kick out of it. We call it her "Alisade" (since our new car is a Palisade) and he loves to take her through "car washes" and such. Geez two kids is fun. I feel much more in my element with two kids than I did with one.
And that's a wrap! It been a fun, exhausting week. Alice is still usually waking "only" twice a night, but the way she's spacing those wakes up now has me getting no more than a 3-hour chunk of sleep at a time. Brutal. Tried to do some sleep training last night to get her to push her first feed back and it did NOT go well. I think she was genuinely hungry so I eventually gave in and won't be trying that again anytime soon. Since I started allergy meds and since I've lost a bunch of weight cutting out soy and dairy (by the way plz no congrats on "losing the weight"--I'm actually very sad about the whole thing and miss my post-baby body I really came to love; maybe I'll get brave and talk about body image in a future post when my milk comes back and I'm past the crying-about-it stage), my milk supply has dropped quite a bit and I think Alice is not getting as much at night as she used to. This week my to-do list is to try and get my supply back up by drinking way more water, increasing calories, resting and taking it easy, avoiding all antihistamines (might be a rough allergy season ahead of me), and feeding/pumping a little extra each day this week. I have no freezer stash left so I'd love to get back to a point where I'm making a little bit of excess that I can store so I have the option of, say, sending Jared down to spend the day at his parents' with the kids while I spend a Saturday cleaning and organizing the house. Planned to do that on Saturday this last week but then realized I didn't have any milk stored and the only formula in our house was dairy based. Darn. Maybe next weekend!
