Well that was madness.

But we did it! We packed up and signed away our Wyoming home. Now I understand why people pay $10,000 to have professional movers do all the packing and loading for them. Absolutely not a possibility for us, but I can understand why you would do that if you had the money to throw around.

There's a moving truck shortage in Wyoming right now. Probably in lots of other places too. Jared made three reservations (one at each of the moving truck companies in Casper) knowing there was a good chance one or more would fall through. Good foresight.

Originally the biggest, cheapest option was a 20' truck from U-haul. That was already going to be a tight squeeze for a 3-bedroom house, but there wasn't anything bigger available. Then two days before the move we got a call from U-haul saying they didn't have a truck available for us anymore. Cool.

Our other options were a 16' truck from Budget, which I laughed in Jared's face at when he told me, and a 24' truck from Penske that was for some reason $2,000 more expensive than the other options. We're not made of money, so we went with the 16' Budget truck, and luckily (or maybe unluckily) that one didn't fall through.

16' of truck is not enough for a 3-bedroom house. Not even close. We ended up selling, donating, giving away, and finally throwing in dumpsters, nearly all of our furniture. Kind of weird to watch this collection of thrifted furniture I've lovingly collected over the past 7 years just get chucked in a dumpster at 1:00 a.m. because we were out of time and had no other options.

Luckily we were able to sell almost all our bigger items on Facebook marketplace pretty quickly. We'll put that toward the bare essentials in our next place: a couch and a dining table that may take months to arrive due to 2021 shipping delays. We were able to hold onto our king mattress and bed frame (but not our guest bed--sorry family, hopefully we'll have a new one by the end of the year). Also our midcentury thrifted record table and a few pieces of patio furniture, and our dressers. But not much else. The silver lining is that we can start fresh and I can use my InTeRiOr DeSiGn CeRtIfIcAtE skills to choose out exactly what we want (within reason). The tricky part is that it'll probably take quiiiite a while until our next home is fully furnished. Like I said, I'll push for a dining table and couch from the get-go, and from there we can plan and save up for the rest. Maybe there will even be a killer thrift store near our next hometown. Please bless. Jared is not a fan of the thrifted furnitures, but golly I love a good thrift find.

I'm glad I started packing for this move in February. It was still a scramble at the end though. Our ward missionaries came by two evenings before we had to be out of our house and helped Jared load the truck while I taped dressers closed and went on a sandwich run. Then when they had to leave an hour later, Jared and I played moving truck tetris and made a thousand trips to thrift stores and dumpsters to make everything fit.

On our last night in our house, we got a text from our buyers telling us they were going to be in town at 8:00 a.m. for the walkthrough and needed to be able to move in immediately after. Would've been nice to know. Our realtor had told us we had until after closing in the late afternoon, but we told the buyers we'd try to be out in the morning. So we stayed up most of the night making final preparations and cleaning everything. It all turned out ok, but we are very exhausted and living like hobos with our cars stuffed full of all the random odds and ends from our house that wouldn't fit in the truck.

We're happy to be settled into our hotel now, even if Jack did discover the magic of an easily accessible microwave and burn a bag of popcorn so badly that our entire floor reeks of smoke. Jared's residency graduation is tomorrow, and then we'll hit the road for Washington. Hopefully the worst of the record-breaking Seattle heat-wave will be over by then! Here are some highlights from our last week:

^^(L-R Whitney Cassity, Kyla Alvey, Me, Amber Thielbar) This is a photo Jack took tonight of me with my best Bar Nunn friends. We became close during our time all serving in YW together. My eyes are puffy and sleep deprived, but I also see joy, sadness, and comfort in my own burnt-popcorn-smelling, makeupless, gross-moving-day skin. Thanks to all of you who prayed these friends to me before we moved here.

Jared and I have moved 5 times now, each time having lived in the past place at least a year or two. This is the first time I haven't just stolen away into the night, not bothering to say goodbye to anyone because goodbyes and emotions are hard. The first time I've made friends that I feel a deep closeness with and sadness about leaving behind. From Whitney I've learned how to serve others without them asking. From Kyla I've learned how to love big and be a friend to everyone. From Amber I've learned how to unapologetically be myself and have a good time. Wish I could pack this group of Wyoming's best into our moving truck and bring them with me. Shoulda paid that extra $2,000 for the 24-footer after all. So grateful that me asking them if we could do one last park playdate picnic turned into Whitney picking me and Jack up from our hotel for cookies and goodbyes at Antelope Park.
^^One last walk along the North Platte River. We saw a huge beaver floating underneath the bridge. Jack made us carry him the rest of the hike after that. He's not too sure about beavers.
^^Bar Nunn finally got its own grocery store our last month living here, and this is it! It's called "Jimmy B's Groceries" and is literally just a little spare room in someone's warehouse with a gas station-esque variety of snacks. It's amazing.
^^The view from our favorite Casper restaurant, Ludovico's.
^^Another photo by Jack. My favorite hike one last time with my friend Amber and new friend Mandi. Jack was a champion keeping up with Amber's 3 older boys. He does great with older kids. He hike-ran almost the entire thing by himself.
^^Jack, Phoenix, Ezra, Talon.

We have one last day to bid Casper goodbye tomorrow. I hope it's filled with another hike, a bit of shopping, a sit-down lunch, a really good nap, and a wonderful graduation dinner for Jared to tie it all together. We've really, genuinely loved our time in Casper. 10/10 would come back to live here someday if we could tone down the wind and bring our families closer.
Nomads Again!

So much to do! I'm drowning in boxes! It's a big week, but I'm happy about the progress we've already made. We'll get our moving truck on Saturday, and then our closing day is two days after that on Monday. Jared still has to work on Tuesday and his graduation is that evening, so we'll stay in a hotel until Wednesday morning and then drive up to Washington.

Gotta get back to packing and cleaning, but here our some pictures from our last fun weekend in Casper. We took Jack to the College National Finals Rodeo. It felt like a nice little bookend to our Casper experience, since we went to the rodeo our first week here as well. It was nostalgic and fun to watch Jack absolutely enthralled with every event. He's our Cowboy Jack.
I wish I'd gotten a shot with the actual rodeo in the background, but oh well. So much fun. My favorite event was the barrel racing. Jack liked the team roping, and Jared liked the classic saddle bronc riding.

On Friday night Jared took Jack to the Casper Speedway to get him out of the house while I did some packing. I think Jared has some pics on his phone, so I'll try to remember to get those for next week. We'd never been to the speedway before. It's an old-school dirt racing track with really cool little cars racing around and around. Jack was in heaven.

One more week! Here's to finishing packing a day or two early so we can hit some of our other favorite Casper hangs one last time. You might not hear from me next Monday since it will be our moving day, but I'll try to post at least once sometime next week. Have a good one!

Rodeo

Ok so to make a very long story hopefully a little bit shorter... (because we're down to 2 weeks and I should prolly be spending all my free time packing...)

We did it! We took a quick trip to Washington over the weekend to check out the areas around Jared's new job and hopefully find a house to buy. Jared looks like he did in our wedding photos here because it was a loooong day and he was very stressed haha

You guys. How did we land this house?! I'm still in shock. The first thing to note is that no home purchase would have been possible for us for several years if we'd ended up going to Utah. So even though we're still a little bit sad that the Utah door is closed right now, this is a big fat silver lining. Thank you salaried job.

The second thing to note is that most other homes we looked at in our budget were in pretty rough shape. And also going for $50-100k above asking price. With multiple competing auction offers. Yikes. This market. Sheesh. We were initially hoping to buy around Lake Stevens, WA. Chris Pratt's beautiful home town with amazing schools and, apparently, pricier houses.

And then somehow we stumbled on this cute little new build neighborhood in a quiet town up against the Cascade Mountains? We apparently have a type when it comes to neighborhoods. Tiny suburban offshoot to a slightly larger "town" but out in the middle of "nowhere" where most people don't want to live because the commute is too "long." (Note: Our commute here in Bar Nunn and our commute in Washington will only be 15-20 minutes to Jared's work. Not too shabby. Definitely worth it to us because cheaper home prices for newer builds. And we'll actually have restaurants and a good grocery store and schools in our new town, so it's a big step up.)

Anyway, Jared found this house and fell in love with it and wasn't even paying attention during any of our other home showings because he was too set on getting to this one. We were nervous we wouldn't get it for a while, but the competition isn't as bad in our new small town and now she's ours! Well, she will be on closing day at the end of July. In the meantime we'll be hopping around between Jared's parents and my parents and family reunions for a few weeks.

In conclusion, it was worth the 15-hour drive both ways to find our new home in Washington over the weekend. A million thanks to my parents for staying with Jack in our home while we made the trek (we wanted to check out the mountain highway going through Montana before we commit to driving a moving truck across it), and we're really, really excited for the area where we'll be living. We're in a rural area a few hours North of Seattle, but within an hour of the ocean and with rivers and hiking right in our backyard. See for yourself:

^^Jared's new commute. It's like this the whole way. She cute.
^^The waterfall/salmon ladder 3 minutes from our house.
^^Looking the other way to the river.
^^Hiking trails 15 minutes from our house. I'm going to need new shoes for this climate. Definitely more muddy than Wyoming.
^^And here are some of the wild raspberries that grow pretty much everywhere! there were tons lining the path to the river and the mountain trail.

Stay tuned for yet another new adventure in a vastly different area of the country/world!
Utah->Grenada->Georgia->Wyoming->Washington. Here we go.
We Bought a House! (In this Economy!!! :o !!)

What a day! Crazy enough of a day that this post will probably solely be about today, and that I'm writing this on my phone from the bath because I spent the last 4 hours on my feet teaching myself to make authentic Neopolitan margherita pizza. After some troubleshooting, I'd say it was a major success. I used an Amazon gift card from Christmas to buy a pizza steel. This was my first time making really any pizza and the magic of the pizza steel speaks for itself (but next time I'll use it on a cooler day so my house doesn't have to reach a million degrees to preheat the steel to 550F):
Took Jack to Jared's clinic today for a wellness check. He was a champ and didn't need any shots. Then I got my first wellness check in years. Knocked out a breast exam, pap smear, blood draw, and wart removal all at once. Felt like a real boss lady afterward and I didn't even pass out. Adulting real hard. (Nevermind that Jared made the appointment for me because I'm too much of a wuss to take the initiative to schedule doctor appointments for myself. Thanks boo.)

I had a nice strategy chat with our Washington realtor today. Last week I put on my researching cap (love me a good research sesh) and found us the best realtor in Snohomish county. (I hope. Will report back if/when we buy a house.) I want to be her when I grow up. She has two undergrad degrees with empheses in architecture and interior design, and a law degree to top it off. And she just had twins. Don't know why she decided to go into real estate, but she's killin it out there. And as she said, "Everyone in this part of Washington has multiple graduate degrees. The competition's going to be fierce." Fun.

The only drawback is also what drew me to her in the first place, and that is that she is so strategic and aggressive that Jared at times feels pressured and his reflex is to want to slam on the breaks and hire someone less gung-ho. But she knows that our timeline is very short (we'll be homeless in 3 weeks) so she's pulling out all the stops to try and help us find a place as quickly as possible. I feel so relieved to have her on our team. We need her kind of force to balance our more passive personalities and our short timeline in this aggressive market. We're driving up to check out the area and hopefully find a house we love later this week. Supply is limited and competition is fierce, but we're hoping for the best (the housing market up there is similar to the housing market in Utah right now--very low supply, very high demand).

So that was my day! Off to pack a suitcase and take Savvy for a sunset walk. Long live Wyoming and her beautiful, quiet sunsets.
Pizza Steel and Realtor of Steel

Happy Memorial Day! We've had a great weekend together. It seems like the first holiday weekend in a looong time that Jared didn't have to work at all. On Saturday we went on and adventure to Martin's Cove, walked through the visitor's center, and did some hiking. I'll do a post with pictures from that day later this week.

Today we started our holiday with a ward breakfast in the neighborhood park. Jared was in charge of it, but luckily I have a friend in the ward who loves a good party and even loves coordinating everything, and she also was recently called as RS president, so she really helped us pull the whole thing together. Turned out great. We had plenty of food and a decent showing.

We spent Jack's nap packing up a few boxes. We took on the "sentimental stuff" category today, which is in my opinion the toughest category because it's easy to get caught up in the nostalgia and decide what stays and what goes. We had fun going through old letters and photos, but it feels good to be onto the next category. We did a big chunk of our packing before we listed our home for sale, so now we're able to just do a few boxes here and there and not feel like we're drowning. After Jack woke up we played and had a yummy dinner and roasted pastry dough cooked over the fire on these "Wolf 'em" roasting sticks I got for my birthday from Jared's parents.

I think you're supposed to use biscuit dough, but I had these little pastry dough rounds on hand and they turned out incredible. It makes a little cup that you can fill with chocolate, jam, whipped cream, whatever. My favorite version was s'more style. Pastry cup stuffed with toasted marshmallow and chocolate.
Then Jack got ahold of my camera and went into photographer mode. Love me a good 3-year-old capture:
^^All of these were taken by Jack. Then we finished our perfect lil holiday with Jack's favorite game: "Wild Jack." Basically Jared chases Jack around the yard with a big blanket and throws it at him to try to catch and tickle/eat a "wild Jack." Jack goes bananas for this game.
We had a full but wonderful day. I hate that we're at this point where I can count the number of weekends we have left in Casper on one hand. We'll have to make the most of them!

I guess I kind of left you hanging about the job situation, so an update: Everything looks like it's going to work out with the dream Washington job! They answered Jared's questions and he signed the contract. We just have to wait for them to dot a few i's and cross a few t's, and the contract should be official in about a week. At that point we're hoping to visit Washington to explore the area where Jared's job will be and decide on a radius of where we'll look for a house. A rental home would cost us so much more than a mortgage so we're hoping to squeeze into a home before Amazon's latest fulfillment center gets up and running in the city we're moving to and new hires flood the housing market. We'll be in a more rural (but not crazy rural--about 25k population) area of NW Washington, just an hour or so north of Seattle.

It seems like the location is a winning combo of being absolutely beautiful (within a half hour of the ocean and also the Cascade mountains), rural enough not to feel crowded but dense enough to have a Costco, and far enough from the big city to not have to deal with traffic much, but close enough to drive in if we want to. Also just about half an hour from Jared's parents! There's still some lingering sadness that it's not the right time for Utah yet, but we're starting to get excited to explore Washington in the meantime. I'll be sure to take some pictures to share when we go up to visit in two weeks.
